Free Lunchtime Con Spirito Concerts
The Con Spirito series of Friday lunchtime concerts, which has been running for almost twenty years, take place in Saint Andrew’s Uniting Church on the corner of Ann and Creek Streets in the city. The series is scheduled for the fourth Friday of each month from March to October and is designed to provide mainly tertiary level music students with a performing opportunity different from that offered by their institution. Students from the Queensland Conservatorium (QCGU) and the University of Queensland’s School of Music are regular performers in this series. A wide range of music is presented and performers include singers, string players, wind players (both individual and ensembles), pianists and organists. In recent series, groups have included a clarinet trio, saxophone quartet, string orchestra, brass ensemble, wind quintet and opera group. The concerts are free of charge.
The October Con Spirito Lunchtime concert will feature the Musical Director and Organist at St Andrew’s Uniting Church Steven Nisbet. Steven’s program will include” A Variation on Song of Joy” by Michael Burkhardt, Fantasia in C minor and Jesu, joy of man’s desiring by J.S. Bach, Allegro Maestoso from Organ Sonata II in C Minor by Felix Mendelssohn, Meditation in E minor by Alexandre Guilmant, Hymn Variations In Thee is gladness; Jesus lead thou on; Cwm Rhondda by Paul Manz, and, in a lighter style, The Entertainer (Scott Joplin), Night and Day (Cole Porter), The Girl from Ipanema (A.C. Jobim) and War March of the Priests by Felix Mendelssohn
